This year's Rockballet, featuring live music from Downstate, is a must-see event. The popular annual production by Springfield Ballet Company is an explosive merging of ballet, modern, jazz and other dance styles, showcasing the talent and diversity of the company dancers and some amazing guest artists.
BUNN is the sponsor of this year's production of Rockballet, set for Saturday, Sept. 13 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 14 at 2 p.m. at Sangamon Auditorium. Ticket prices range from $16 to $30 and are available by calling the Sangamon Auditorium ticket office at 217-206-6160.
Guest choreographers include: Hernan Justo and Francesca Genovese, Carolina Ballet Theatre; Elizabeth Chapman, The Georgia Ballet and alumni of SBC; Todd Kiech, Chicago-based actor and choreographer; Elizabeth Staab, Chicago-based dancer and alumni of SBC; and Herman Payne, graduate of The Julliard School and Associate Artistic Director of Broadway Theatre Project; as well as local choreographers Gina DeCroix Russell, Tiffany Riech and Gary Shull.
WYMG is the media sponsor for this year's production. Rockballet, with live music by the band Downstate, will showcase songs from 1975 and 1976 in recognition of the Springfield Ballet Company's 40th Anniversary Season. Rockballet features music from Queen, David Bowie, Fleetwood Mac, The Doobie Brothers, Nazareth, Vicki Sue Robinson, Sweet, Kiss, and the O'Jays, just to name a few!
Downstate band members include Damien Kaplan, Mary Kate Smith, Maggie Jacobs, Brock Bennett, Tim Niemeyer, Brian Earleywine, Robb Stark, and Brandt Sitze.
A vivid and exciting mix of adventurous choreography, memorable music and high-intensity dancing, Rockballet promises to be an unforgettable performance both visually and audibly.
The Springfield Ballet Company is a civic, not-for-profit ballet company that has been entertaining and educating area audiences since 1975 and is partially supported by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency. The company offers three major productions at the University of Illinois at Springfield's Sangamon Auditorium each year, and also performs at festivals, schools and nursing homes throughout central Illinois. SBC is committed to providing equitable opportunities for company dancers to be trained in and to perform the art of dance, and to offer opportunities for all members of the central Illinois community to be educated and entertained.
Other upcoming SBC events for the 40th Anniversary Season include The Nutcracker, on Dec. 13 and 14, 2014 with live musical accompaniment by the Illinois Symphony Orchestra led by Music Director Alastair Willis, and Swan Lake on April 18 and 19, 2015.
