It will be a white Christmas this year, at least for two days inside the historic Marvel Theater on Thanksgiving weekend. At 1 p.m. that Saturday and Sunday, the Christmas Market’s fourth annual Thanksgiving Movie Days special will feature the classic movie White Christmas.
Tickets for the special presentation are available in advance for a discounted price of $5 at the Carlinville Community Chamber of Commerce office on the northeast side of the town square. Tickets will also be available at the door for $6 each. Popcorn, snacks, and soft drinks will be available at the Marvel’s usual prices.
The Christmas Market also announced that a very special person will make a guest appearance on both days. They would not reveal who it is, but they did say that he almost always wears red and always laughs a hearty laugh, especially when he’s around children.
White Christmas stars Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney, and Vera Ellen. It is a colorful, romantic comedy laced with popular holiday songs, including “White Christmas,” one of the most popular songs of any kind ever recorded.
“As famous as our classic Christmas movies are, there are always people who still haven’t seen them, for one reason or another,” said Carlinville Christmas Market Foundation board president Doug Downey. “Lots of kids and young adults also see them for the first time and discover that ‘This movie was great . . . for being 60 years old.’
“The rest of our audience, of course, is made up of people who have seen the movie before, often many times, but still want to see it again. That’s why they’re called classics.”
Downey gave special thanks to Marvel Theater manager Steve Daugherty for making the theater available and giving up his ticket sales to support the Christmas Market’s fund-raising efforts.
Proceeds from ticket sales go toward expenses for producing the 2013 Christmas Market.
