Lincoln Home National Historic Site is pleased to host students from the Compass for Kids after school program on Saturday, May 19, 2018 from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. In recognition of their completion of the "Journey to Greatness: Character Lessons from the Past" program, students and their families are invited to participate in a "Celebration of the Journey." The Celebration will be held at the Lincoln Home Visitor Center, located at 426 S. 7th Street, Springfield, IL 62701.

"Journey to Greatness: Character Lessons from the Past" is an interactive web based lesson designed to help students discover how the challenges they might face today, such as fear, prejudice, poverty, not fitting in, or anger, can be overcome by learning how heroes from our past, Abraham Lincoln, Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman, and Martin Luther King, Jr., overcame similar challenges when they were young. "Journey to Greatness" can be used to achieve a variety of goals, from focusing on the in depth history content to reaching students with inspiring lessons of good character and sound positive decision making skills. For more information see: www.nps.gov/liho/forteachers/journey-to-greatness.htm

The Saturday, May 19 event is the culmination of a several month long partnership between the Compass for Kids after school program and Lincoln Home NHS through which National Park Rangers taught the "Journey to Greatness" curriculum to all of the 3rd to 5th grade youth at each of the Compass for Kids afterschool program locations around the Springfield area.  Each location is hosted by a local church that operates in the neighborhood of the Springfield Public School that specific Compass program services.

The "Celebration of the Journey" program will feature a variety of activities including, meeting Abraham Lincoln, Harriet Tubman, and Martin Luther King Jr.; Participating in an oratorical contest; and ranger-led tours of the Lincoln Home.
