"We had more than 150 children audition this year and the cast features 60 area performers, ages 7-18, from Springfield, Petersburgh, Pleasant Plains, Rochester, Chatham, Athens, and Williamsville," explains Adam Power, director of Disney's Little Mermaid, Jr. and the director from last year's production of Disney's Aladdin, Jr. "With the success of the junior musical last year, Theatre in the Park wanted to continue the opportunity for kids to perform in a production that is designed for them,"
The concept of junior musicals is relatively new. Conceived in 1996 by MTI, Broadway Junior™ musicals are condensed, author-approved versions of classic musicals, Disney favorites, and modern works, custom-tailored to the needs of young people and schools. The music is written in keys that are appropriate for developing voices, and all shows can be expanded to accommodate as many performers as can fit on the stage.
Journey "under the sea" with Ariel and her aquatic friends in Disney's The Little Mermaid JR., adapted from Disney's Broadway production and the motion picture (featuring the enormously popular Academy Award-winning music and delightfully charming book and lyrics). Based on one of Hans Christian Andersen's most beloved stories, Disney's The Little Mermaid JR. is an enchanting look at the sacrifices we all make for love and acceptance.
Sponsored by Athens State Bank, The Little Mermaid, Jr. has music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman and Glenn Slater, and book by Doug Wright.
