The Elijah Iles House will host its annual "Clara Irwin's Strawberry Party" on Wednesday, July 4 from 5 to 8 p.m. on the lawn of the Iles House, 628 South Seventh Street. Clara Irwin, the spouse of the house's second owner, was known for her promotion of the horticultural arts in central Illinois, and was renown for the quality of her strawberries — and her strawberry parties — in the 1840s and ‘50s.
Lady Liberty will lead guests in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance at 5 p.m. followed by a musical performance by the popular Burr Oak String Band of Champaign-Urbana, back for the third straight year. A historical program from 6:15 to 6:45 p.m. will feature a group reading of the Declaration of Independence as well as toasts to Presidents and other leaders from the Whig and Democratic Parties. Children may play 19th century games during the evening.
A wide variety of strawberry concoctions will be sold at family-friendly prices including strawberry shortcake, strawberry sundaes, strawberry slushies, and non-alcoholic strawberry daiquiris. Guests may purchase other food items as well.
Guests are also invited to tour the interior of the Iles House before the party from noon to 4 p.m. with tours resuming during the party from 5 to 8 p.m.
This event has grown more popular every year and is a wonderful way for a family to experience and old-fashioned Independence Day
Clara Irwin's Strawberry Party is open to the public and all are invited to attend. Free parking is available at the lot on the southeast corner of Seventh and Cook Streets. The event will be canceled if it is raining.
