The Comeback of Conservation in Illinois

Paul Mickey Learning Series presented by Jared Duquette, Illinois Department of Natural Resources

Wednesday, April 4, 7:00-8:30 pm

Illinois State Museum Auditorium

Free and open to the public

Illinois is called the "Prairie State" for good reason – it once held millions of acres of native prairie in which biodiversity flourished. But over time most of the native habitat gave way to a diversity of human uses, particularly agriculture and development of infrastructure. During this period, conservationists began to study and understand how important proactive conservation and management were to sustaining biodiversity, and even human interests, such as hunting and fishing. Following enactment of several key legislative acts and agencies, including what is now the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, native wildlife and habitat in Illinois began a twisty road to preservation and conservation. Today, numerous agencies and organizations work together to conserve and manage Illinois' native wildlife and habitat. These partnerships are key to maintaining natural resources for future generations and combating threats such as land development, climate change, and pollution. This presentation will discuss the road to modern wildlife conservation in Illinois, with highlights on initiatives that have bolstered wildlife and habitat across the state, and particularly around Springfield.

Each month, the Paul Mickey Learning Series features a different speaker and topic in the Auditorium at the Illinois State Museum. This month's lecture is being held in conjunction with the "Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow: Springfield's Bicentennial Town Hall Series" organized by the Illinois Bicentennial Coordinating Committee of Springfield.
