Three unique and influential women from America's earliest days will come to life March 18 when the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum presents "Ladies First: The Letters of Martha Washington, Abigail Adams and Dolley Madison."

The presentation, in a reader's theater format, offers a personal glimpse into the sacrifices they and their families made as the nation was being founded. It also shows the truth of the adage "behind every great man is a great woman." At a time when women's roles were restricted, these three influenced their husbands' decisions, careers or determination during moments of crisis.

"Ladies First" was compiled by Curt Columbus and first performed at Steppenwolf Theatre in Chicago. It is being presented as part of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum's celebration of Women's History Month.

The performance takes place at 3 p.m., Sunday, March 18. Tickets are included in regular museum admission.

It stars Ann Collins as Martha Washington, Julia Harney as Abigail Adams and Dianne Dietz as Dolley Madison.

"We've been discussing presenting this piece for two years," said director Phil Funkenbusch. "Each one of these actors makes these historical figures from the past come deeply alive, becoming such real people before our eyes."

The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum (located at 212 N. Sixth St., Springfield) is dedicated to telling the story of America's 16th president through old-fashioned scholarship and modern technology.

The library holds an unparalleled collection of Lincoln books, documents, photographs, artifacts and art. The museum uses traditional exhibits, eye-catching special effects and innovative story-telling techniques to educate visitors.

It also has some 12 million items pertaining to all aspects of Illinois history, making the library one of the nation's leading institutions for genealogy and history research.
