The American Legion is turning 100, and American Legion Department of Illinois with its membership of 126,000 Family Members, representing 737 local Posts throughout the state with American Legion, Auxiliary, Sons of the Legion and Legion Riders, are planning to celebrate our Centennial Department Convention. It will be held at the BOS Center, 1 Convention Center Plaza, Springfield Illinois, July 11th through July 15th.
With a current national membership of nearly 2 million wartime veterans, The American Legion, the largest veteran's service organization in the nation, that was founded in 1919 on the four pillars of a strong national security, veteran's affairs, Americanism and youth programs. Legionnaires work for the betterment of their communities through more than 13,000 posts across the nation and around the world.
The Legion Family's legacy of community volunteerism and the organization's significant national role in everything from development of U.S.Flag code, passage of the GI Bill and acceptance of Agent Orange exposure as causes for adverse health effects among veterans of the Vietnam War, to support for our nation's troops in the Global War on Terrorism. On the National and Local levels, The American Legion continues to support youth programs, readiness to assist in national disasters and call to honor and remember those who came before is unparalleled.
