The Old Capitol Farmers' Market, a Downtown Springfield, Inc. event, presented by St. John's Hospital will host the annual Halloween at the Market, Saturday, Oct. 25. This festive event wraps up the 2014 market season. The Market is located in downtown Springfield, on Adams Street, between Fifth and Second Streets and is open from 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Representatives from St. John's Children's Hospital, Mid-West Family Broadcasting, SpringfieldMoms.org, Illinois Humane, Illinois National Bank, Illinois Stewardship Alliance, Kidzeum, GenH Kids, and Westminster Pre-School, have combined efforts to create free, fun-filled activities for the whole family, including children and dog costume contests, hands-on activities, story-telling by Cathy Mosley, a chef demonstration by Chef Michael Higgins, a festive "self-take" photo booth and a special guest appearance by "Raphael the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle." Children's activities will be held 10:00 a.m. to Noon in the parking lot on the Southeast corner of 4th & Adams Streets. Local artisans will also be onsite exhibiting and selling their original artwork.
New this year is a Giant Pumpkin 50/50 raffle! For $1.00 you can purchase a raffle ticket and guess the weight of the giant pumpkin for a chance to win the pumpkin and 1/2 of the raffle money collected. Person guessing the closest to the actual weight of the pumpkin wins. Raffle will be held from 10 a.m. to approximately noon. Winner will be announced on stage immediately following the children's costume contest; need not be present to win.
Children ages 0-12 can register at the SpringfieldMoms.org booth located in the parking lot at the Southeast corner of Fourth and Adams Streets beginning at 9:30 a.m.; children's contest begins at 11 a.m. Kim Leistner of Springfieldmoms.org will emcee the contest and announce winners in three age categories and a "Best Family Costume" category. Prizes will be awarded in all categories. Rachel Thomson (Kidzeum), Marilyn Titone Schaefer (INB), and a representative of Mid-West Family Broadcasting will serve as contest judges.
Canine contestants can register at the Illinois Humane booth, located near Fifth and Adams Streets, beginning at 10 a.m. with the canine costume contest at noon. Prizes for the Canine Contest include gifts from Incredibly Delicious, Nature Select Pet Foods, Miggy Lane Gourmet Dog Bakery, Comfy Critters Pet Sitter, Dal Acres Boarding and Grooming, Dog Class Behavior Training, The Cardologist, and Healing Hands Pet Massage and Pet Sitting Services. Illinois Humane will feature a raffle at its booth; all proceeds to be used for the care of the animals in need that come into Illinois Humane's custody. Raffle items are being provided by Michael Yokley, Area Director for Pampered Chef; Kinner Kennels, Inc.; Javonna Homan Hand-Crafted Jewelry; On The Edge Jewelry (Cheryl Harvey); Karen Dyas Florals; Tiny Tokens by Jen; and Shannon O'Connor, Independent Consultant, Origami Owl Jewelry. Chris Murphy from WNNS will serve as Master of Ceremony. Serving as judges for the canine contest will be U.S. District Judge Sue Myerscough, Sangamon County Circuit Court Judge John Schmidt, and former Sangamon County Circuit Court Judge (and former interim City of Springfield Corporation Counsel) John Melick.
